I don't know much about the Silmarillion, and I was wondering if some of the more learned fans could answer this question for me:

The beginning of the Silmarillion seemed very sudden to me, and what always bothered me was that Tolkien didn't expand on Iluvatar very much. Was he always there, like God, or was he created by some greater spirit? Basically, what are the origins of Iluvatar?
