Peony didn't even ask Strider this time if Rivendell lay somewhere amongst those hills they could glimpse. He always answered patiently, but she didn't really want to know how far they still had to go. But Sam whispered to her: "Only a bit over a hundred miles now, and we've come over three hundred already from Hobbiton." "How is Frodo hanging on?" she asked. "He's hanging on," Sam answered, sounding sure but looking less so.
