But concerning "metaphoric" wings, you are omitting words where they are. JRRT says "his wings stretched from wall to wall." Absent some clear evidence to the contrary, the position of those who say Balrogs do not have wings amounts to stating that JRRT did not mean what he said. Fair for you to say the Sil. does not state that Balrogs flew over Cuivienen. That is true, it does not. Fair for me to say LoTR says Balrogs have wings.
