You are exactly right, Sophia.
Your turn. I like your new avatar....it makes me smile every time I see it, and it seems appropriate for the quiz room. [ May 18, 2003: Message edited by: Eruanna ]

The Stones, Stars and Scion of Nimloth (the White Tree) are mentioned in the Rhyme of Lore (Tall ships and tall kings...)
The ship of Earendil is not mentioned, so is that the odd one out?

Does the Scion of Nimloth refer to the tree or to the "other" Nimloth? (If I am allowed to ask) Scion means descendant, or younger member of the family....

"Scion of Nimloth" refers to the tree. Specific isn't it?

Is the tree the connection?
The stones held the light of the trees, the stars were made from vats of Telperion and the Scion of Nimloth was also descended from the trees. So the odd one out is the ship.... But the ship, became a star...Aaaargh, Sophia you are driving me round the twist with this one! A well deserved

I know this isn't right, but maybe it will help someone else. This question is a killer!
Well...The Scion of Nimloth is the only one that wasn't originally something else, made from that thing by some person...and the stones are the only items who's, um, "substance" is unknown, right? Oh! Are the stones the only item that was not remade or replaced? (or regrown?) Or were they the only items to be (at least some of them) lost or destroyed entirely? That's considering you mean the trees in general and not just one...which isn't very likely, considering that creepy keeps popping up...... Did I just think up all of that? |

Arestevana- None of your suggestions have been right.
However, when I say Scion of Nimloth, I mean particularly the one tree that was brought by Elendil from Numenor and planted in Gondor. That tree and no other. That should be a clue of some sort. Sophia

Thought so.....
Okay, one more go. The Ship is the odd one out because it was taken West across the seas. All of the other items are from the west and moved Eastward to Arda, either from Numenor or from Valinor. That's all I can think of..... [ May 25, 2003: Message edited by: Arestevana ] |

Ok, I'm still confused But:
The stones held the light of the trees and some of them became stars in the sky. The stars were made from vats of Telperion, the original White tree and became er, stars in the sky. The Scion of Nimloth, was also descended from Telperion, but did not become a star. Earendil's ship (and Earendil wearing a silmaril) became a star in the sky. So....the Scion is the odd one out as it did not become a star....or... Earendil's ship is the odd one out as it was not connected to Telperion?

Or... The stones and the Scion of Nimloth were on the ships that escaped the Drowning of Numenor, these ships each had a banner of stars. Isildur's ship had the Scion and one stone)
So the odd one out is Earendil's ship? I have promised myself that this is positively my last guess....though I have a feeling I'll be kicking myself when the answer is revealed.....

None of these are right, although in your very star-related post you were talking about the right stones and right stars.
Please don't stop guessing, you're really rather close to the answer... Sophia

The stones (Silmarilli), stars and Scion of Nimloth were all made from the original White tree, Telperion. Earendil's ship Vingilot is the odd one out?

Thunder Mistress, you are driving me crazy with this question! So crazy in fact, that I will resort to posting
"All but the Scion of Nimloth were seen as stars". I am positive that I am wrong. I may die of shock if I am right. Then again, I may perish in furstration if this question is never answered... |

All the other objects except the Ship of Earendil were once, or still are, the insignia or identifying factors of Elendil's House, or the Kingdoms of the West (Arnor and Gondor).

The Scion of Nimloth is the odd one about because it is the only thing not made of "otherworldly" substances, or the only thing not transmuted to "otherwordly" substances.

*laughs* nope, not that easy.
Although, I really didn't think it was that hard. The key is something that happened to them.

You didn't think it was hard? That hint is making it worse. Nimloth was stolen. So were the stones. The key (not the answer) is something that happened to them? So...Nimloth was the only one to survive a big explosion. That sounds lame even to me! Something that happened to the Tree or to everything BUT the tree? Or should have happened but didn't?

Something that happened to everything but the tree. And it's really a fairly basic thing.

*grumpy*
They were all (except for the tree)called by another name? No. White Tree. I get the feeling I'm making this harder than it is. They were all (Not the tree) made or remade in Valinor? *grumpier* This is no good. i'm giving up. |

All were visible from Valinor, in the night sky, except for the tree; which wasn't.

I've been staring at this for what seems like hours, so I may as well guess. OK, if you're talking about the tree that was taken to Gondor might it be that that was never in Valinor? While the others were?

Tricky. Very tricksy. This thing is driving me nuts. NUTS, I tell you. The tree wasn't made by the Valar. The tree wasn't made by the Elves. The tree wasn't seen by the Valar. The tree wasn't seen by the Elves. It's trick question. There is no right answer. You're just trying to distract us while you take over the world. None of these have anything to do with Earendil's ship. I think I'll just curl up and die.

alquadae, to put this riddle out of it's misery, I'm going to take that.
The extremely simple answer was that the Stones (Silmarils), Stars (of Elbereth) and Ship of Earendil were all touched by the Valar. See, not nearly tricky as it seems. Sophia
