I work for ITV Granada News in Manchester and would dearly love the person who wrote about the connection of Tolkien to the Eagle and Child pub in Lancashire to get in touch with me.
I can be contacted on 0161 827 2036 or 07736 947697. |

The pub name "The Eagle and Child" is very common. The one in which Tolkien and his friends met in was in Oxford.
Sorry.

Andrew - that would be me, feel free to send me a PM. I don't ring random numbers just to be safe.
It wasn't about the connection of Tolkien to the pub in Lancs, just that the Eagle & Child in Bispham Green (AKA Th'Eagle) has the same name and origins as the Eagle & Child in Oxford (AKA Bird & Baby). Both pubs were on land owned by the Earls of Derby, the Stanley family; the houses in Bispham were part of the estate too. I guess the only real Tolkien connection to Th' Eagle in Bispham is I used to drink there and I'm a Tolkien nutter. Sorry if that's disappointing. I guess me and me pals from t'Green were more of a Stinklings than an Inklings.

Maybe you should also investigate " The Ivy Bush " on Hagley Road in Birmingham .
Also, nearby in the Ladywood area ( near or on Waterworks Road ) there are 2 follies which are said to have inspired the notion of the " 2 Towers " . Last edited by The Mouth of Sauron; 10-15-2006 at 05:33 PM. |
