Insulting Tolkien

In this threa we can discuss our blunders and disappointments of trying to show our love for Tolkien's works. What I mean is have you ever tried to pay homage to LOTR or any other Tolkien work just to look at the final product and say "I just insulted Tolkien!"

In art we recently had to do landscapes well being all LOTR freaky I made 8 landscapes based off the book I looked at all of them just to say they fell short of art I got an A- on them however if I had shown them to any true Tolkien fan they would have A)died laughling at my skill. B)Died crying due to my insult to tolkien's work. or C)torn them to bits making me vow to never look at Tolkien again because I'm a pathetic excuse for a fan to butcher the books beuty like that.

I have therefore refrained from ever doing aything in art LOTRE related insulting it the way I did was a sin.

I don't think you have to be so hard on yourself. I mean, of course we're not all as gifted as Tolkien was, but the good thing is we are always motivated to try our best to pay our humble tribute to him.

But I can imagine how you felt, because I had a similar situation happen to me, when I tried to write a fanfic story. I had the characters (original characters), I had what was relatively a good storyline, but I made a mess of it because it had none of the charm and the beauty of Tolkien's writing, so I felt, like you did, that I somehow 'insulted' it and spoilt it. So I just stopped writing anything related to Middle Earth, even though I sometimes yearn to do it - I know I'm not capable so I let the moment pass.

well I had this awesome idea on how to paint Rivendell like I put a circle around the paper ands make it look faded and I wrote the description from the book in old style cursive that came out good but then the painting itself was like a brown box was the last homely house and the valley look like a plain of green grass wannabe stuff it was sad

I probably insulted Tolkien the most in some of the RPGs that I've participated in. Most of my characters were so far from the realm of ME in a sense that I felt like Disney in the sense that they didn't even fit the general story. Not to say that I've disowned all of my characters, a few still have a special place in my heart.

I believe that, in most cases, you would have to try significantly to insult Tolkien. Specifically, Morsul, I believe that he would value the fact that you even decided to try to draw something that related to his Middle Earth, I don't think the results would make much of a difference, it's concept art anyway. Now, if you purposfully made a horrid drawing of Legolas that made him look like a dwarf, then tried to tell everyone, "This is what Legolas looks like!", that might bother him. But I think he would appreciate true effort no matter what the results.

True, but I know that at least I meant that I insulted Tolkien's "essense." Not that I actually expected him or his aura to rise out of his grave. (As interesting as that would be.)

Don't let it pass. Do it. The more you do, the better it'll get. Write your main points, write your story, then get a Beta to check it over for you.

Believe me, it's better to do it than to want to and not.

I'm sad to say I have done that before, but a few minutes later I changed my mind and used Harry Potter instead.

1420!

Well, have any of you read either Revenge of the Entish Bow or Reunification of the Entish Bow, two RPGs here from Gondor? What those gamers do! Honestly. I mean, I don't think they tried to insult Tolkien. They did insult Tolkien! In high dudgeon! Or low humour! With allegorical references to all kinds of creation, sub, primary and non-numerical-nonconsolational. These RPGs have this inner inconsistency of surreality. And such longing there is! You won't find posts longer anywhere else on the Barrow Downs (unless it is a davem/Bethberry posting duel in Books). You couldn't say there's applicability but they sure do have lots of, um, piercings, some not so fleeting. They just can't get rid of all these infernal references and self-references and various other preferences, to say nothing of pecadillos and armadillos.

If anyone can find a thread of Tolkien respect in the REBs, why, it would be a eucatastrophe! The quality of their joy is hardly restrained.

Boots Random Titles come to a turning point....

I must admit that I have made some unintentional mistakes in the past. Most though, haven't been in role-playing. In fact most of my blunders have either been in this forum, or in Newcomers. I'm thankful that most of them have been on deleted threads.

I wonder though if Tolkien (being a professor) were alive to day, would he be insulted by all the gramatical mistakes some fans (like me) make frequently?
