Shield Thre Rings for the Elven Kings Under the Sky...

Yep, there were three of 'em. Galadriel got one, Elrond got one...but who got the third? It would make sense for Thranduil to get one, because then each kingdom would have a ring...but he didn't. Does anyone know who got the third ring? It's really been bugging me...

I think it's said clearly at least in the Silmarillion, and in LOTR(or at least in one of the appendixes)

One was given to Galadriel, yep. Other was given to Gil-Galad, who gave it to Elrond when he marched to war. The third, the Ring of Fire, Narya, was given to Círdan the Shipwright, who dwelt in the Grey Havens. When the istari arrived, he gave it to Gandalf, and it's also mentioned in the last chapter of LOTR.

Oh thanks! I knew Gandalf had a ring, but I didn't think it was an elf ring, seeing as he's not an elf. That explans alot. Thanks~

Theres a discussion about Narya, the third ring, with some other links here: Narya the Hidden?

Maybe that helps

Me and my cousin had a long huge debate on wether or not Narya was kept with Gil-galad until the battle of the last alliance (you thought the Balrog one was big). It says in unfinished tales that tolkien had a good bit of notes the he waited, but there is no evidence in any of the other books each way.

Didn't it say that Gil-galad gave it to Círdan? This could've happened at any time, since Gil-galad was the High-king and Lord of Lindon. I think that it would be cool if Gil-galad gave Narya to Círdan as he lay dying after "wrestling" with Sauron. If not, the question surfaces: Why would Gil-galad go to war without his greatest source of power?

At the time of the Last Alliance Sauron still had the One Ring - wherefore Gil-galads ring wouldn't have been an asset for him, but a liability!!! - The three elven rings were not used in the Second Age - only after Sauron lost the one could the elves use them...

Erm.. Narya was given to Círdan by Celebrimbor. Gil-Galad gave the Ring of Air to Elrond. The Elven-rings didn't have any power in war - they were used to protect the elven-realms from fading. They had different kind of power than the other rings. And the other point Telchar already said.

It makes no sense though, if Gil-Galad really did have it. I'm confused again.

I thought Celebrimbor gave both Narya and Vilya to Gil-galad and it was the high-king who passed Narya to Cirdan?

I always thought that Gil-galad gave Narya to Cirdan soon after he recieved it and when he was at Imladris during the march of the Last Alliance, he gave Vilya to Elrond.

Hmm.. Could be. I thought it was given to Círdan by Celebrimbor, but it's not the first time I'm wrong :P

The three rings were forged by Celebrimbor. Cirdan the shipwright got Narya the Red ring of Fire, but he Entrusted it to Gandalf because Cirdans heart was in the sea. It's in the Silmarillion pages 345, 358, and 365.

Cirdan to Gandalf- "Take now this Ring, for thy labours and thy cares will be heavy, but in all it will support thee and defend thee from weariness. For this is the Ring of Fire, and here with, maybe, thou shalt rekindle hearts to the valour of old in a world that grows chill. But for me, my heart is with the Sea,and I will dwell by the grey shores, guarding the Havens until the last ship sails. Then I will await thee."

Hope this helps. -Yavanna
