Suilad,

The Elvish language is Sindarin, and the Poem which is not complete is the Poem of the Rings of Power.

I have completed the verse in both English and Sindarin.

Navaer - LadyMeg

Glîr i Chyrf e-Ndur

Corf neledh 'nin Ellerain nui venel,
Odo'ni Nauhírath vi rynd gonui în,
Neder'ni Fîr Fírib beraid fíred,
Êr am Morchír bo morn-orchamm dîn
Vi Dor e-Mordor ias i-Ndúath caedar.

Er-chorf a thorthad hain bain, Er-chorf a chired hain,
Er-chorf a thoged hain bain a din fuin an nuded hain
Vi Dor e-Mordor ias i-Ndúath caedar.

Poem of the Rings of Power

Rings three for the Elven kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarven lords in their stony halls,
Nine for the Men mortal doomed to die,
One for Dark lord on his dark throne,
In Land of Mordor in which the Shadows lie.

One Ring for ruling them all, One Ring for finding them,
One Ring for bringing them all in and in the darkness bind them,
In Land of Mordor in which the Shadows lie.

Yay LadyMeg! One of the holdovers from the Language forum! What a merry meeting! I've seen you and Galadrie1, but I fear that Ravandah is lost to us.

If anyone has questions about the elvish lang or the writings (the only thing I could remotely help anyone with), maybe this thread is the ticket.

Ah, the good ol' days!

I'm afraid I drifted away from this forum when the language section disappeared...

Anyone know a good place to learn elvish? I'd like a reference in case I ever have nothing better to do.

Also, does Gondor have any old language, or do the citizens only speak the common tongue?

Suilad Meela,

Regarding your Question about Gondor;

The most common language spoken throughout northern and western Middle-earth is Westron that evolved from Adûnaic as spoken in Númenor also the regions of Gondor.

Why could Aragorn speak Elvish! because he had been brought up with Elves and had learn't the language.

Quenya was never widely spoken in Middle-earth, except among the Noldor. Sindarin was more commonly spoken.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Websites for learning Elvish;
Sindarin I recommend the Council Of Elrond great site look in their "Language section"
Council Of Elrond
For Quenya You would go to 'Ardalambion'
Look under Quenya.
Ardalambion
Good day, JP20. Thanks for starting up this thread!
Elvish is always interesting!
Well, back to the topic, I can speak a little Elvish (don’t want to seem boastful), I am still learning. It’s marvelous, because if you look really well on the Net, you can find some really worthwhile sites and some great Elvish references on the language. I even found an Elvish dictionary at www.grey-comapany.org
I see many members’ nicks and signatures have Elvish meanings. Mine means “moon princess” (best I could do ) and my sig say “best wishes and have a good day!”
Just to share that with you (probably wasn’t all that contributive to the topic, but anyway! ).
Learning Quenya when I have the time, not very good yet. Try www.hot-elf.com. OK, so it's a Legolas fan site, but there is a really good Quenya wordlist if you click on 'learn elvish'
If you want an insult:
Auta Miqula Orqu (go kiss an orc)
Mereth en Draugrim (feast of wolves)
Aiya ilquen/Hello Everybody,
Many people who wish to speak Elvish have spoken much of the "Grey Company Elvish" and "Hot Elf" for those of us who want to learn the True Tolkien languages, it is best to stick to sites mentioned above that teach Elvish such as The Council Of Elrond, and Ardalambion.
Sindarin : To Go Kiss An Orc! Mîbo orch! ( or Bado mîbo orch!)
Hey LadyMeg! (the genius of elvish!)
Just to add in that Auta miqula orqu!also means Go Kiss An Orc!
Just a thought. It's rather funny and useful to say to an enemy. LOL, they won't know what you're saying!
The auta miqula orcu thing was taken from a site which is not quite acurate, I believe. Still, I might be wrong, so don't mind me if so
My personal translation came out to be "Autal miqula orco."
The l was added to Auta to turn it into the command (you) go. And I switched orco, the word I usually use for orc for orqu, which means demon.
Have I been any help?
Tarien Ithil, a little bit of advice. If you want to learn true Tolkien elvish, do not go to the Grey Company. They will teach you Grelvish, Sindarin and Quenya mashed together, along with many new words, and therefore will not be teaching Tolkien elvish.
If you want to learn Tolkien elvish, I recommend the above sites whose links are given in an earlier post (Ardalambion and the Council of Elrond).
Hey Nurumaiel
Yeah, I have heard that the Grey Company isn't the greatest and most accurate
But thanks for the advice anyway
Best Wishes,
