LotR meets South Park
Did anybody see last night's South Park? (At least I think it was last night...) I'd never watched South Park before, nor did I really watch this one, as there were corruptable youngsters in the room with me. I was wondering if anybody else saw it, and what your reaction was.
If anybody's wondering what this has to do with Lord of the Rings, the episode was basically a parody--the three kids (no, I don't know their names!) were sent on a "quest" to deliver the One Tape (a copy of LotR) to another kid's house, but it turned out to be....not LotR, and they were sent on another quest to retrieve it and bring it back to one of the kid's parents. Wackiness and mindless cursing ensues. ~*~Orual~*~

That's....exciting, to be sure, that Tolkien has reached the...ummm...level that it has....
Shouldn't this be in "Middle-earth Mayhem" or something?

*sigh* pop culture at work again, trying its best to tarnish the true art it wishes it could be. or something like that. best thing to do: ignore it. it might not go away, but you do worse by paying attention. if tolkien rose from the dead right now, and caught wind of this, he'd go running as fast as any reanimated person could run to his grave and try to forget he heard anything.

I imagine you're right, Demloth. And it would've been in Middle-earth Mayhem, Manwe, only sadly it really did air. Or have I still not quite gotten the hang of the purposes of the different forums?

:::WARNING:::
SOUTH PARK EPISODE CONTAINS "ADULT MATERIAL" :::WARNING::: So, in other words, if you really want to know why Butters turns into Gollum, I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the usual South Park material. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from watching it, but they seem to tarnish LotR with. . . um. . .how do I say this? Well, let's just say that South Park is for "mature audiences only". But it's really funny when Butters starts to act like Gollum, and how the kids end up getting rid of him. In fact, they basically give away the ending to TTT and RotK at the end of the episode. * Poor, poor, soul and bones of Ronald. Not only do they have to stand the horror of the PJ movie, they also have to cope with this kind of humor.

I didn't see it, but knowing South Park, it was probably hilarious. Don't take it so seriously!

LOTR and SP are, to me, two things people shouldn't mix. why there was ever a need for south park at all also boggles my mind. whats the point? so far i have seen none, unless someone would like to tell me.

Jesus people lighten up. LotR is not your god (and if it is, i pity you). Anyways, i made this thread in M.E.M., and the episode was hilarious. SO let go a little and have some fun.

am not like an "angery mother at church," merely an art critic. how is mindless cursing art? the two don't seem to be very interrelated-but this is just my opinion. as for telling everyone to lighten up, everyone has a choice whether to lighten up or not. some people will view it as little short of heresy, some will laugh along as they watch the show. tis THEIR choice.

If Tolkien didn't have a sense of humor, there wouldn't been any Tooks. Or the Green Dragon. Or Bree. or anything with alcohol.
And hobbit leaf! Come on the guy's heroes of the story were about 4 feet tall with big ol' hairy feet. you KNOW he had a sense of humor.

Of course Tolkien had a sense of humour! ^_^ "Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took..." LoL!
So, I don't know what to think now...it's funny, it's blasphemy, I didn't see it. Hm. Well, I guess that whether or not I'll watch it is a foregone conclusion given that I'm not the only one in the house that would be exposed to South Park if I watched it. Oh well. Might be just as well anyway--or it might be a tragedy--or maybe I just don't know. Okay. Now my head hurts. ~*~Orual~*~

I thought the beginning was funny. I especially liked the part where the guy dressed as Gandalf attacked the "dragon" (oncoming car). But it got significantly racier as time went on, so I stopped. Oh well--my loss?

Butters is exposed to The One Tape, becomes Gollum. "My precious," third person speech.
"monster of Rivendell" The One Tape has an evil power, if you use it bad things happen. 6th graders as nazgul, sniffing around in the woods to find the boys, very much as in the movie. Cartman does door opening spells, as Gandalf does at the gate of Moria. An army of 6th graders searching for The One Tape, as Sauron's armies. Token watches the tape and issues a warning much like Aragorn before he uses the palantir. The Tape can not be trusted with anybody, it must be returned to the video store from whence it came. It came from Two Towers video store, and it will take a long time to walk there. The Tape must be returned before it causes more damage. A dwarf offers to take it, an elf says that dwarfs can't be trusted with things of that much power. It is too far and too dangerous to do alone, so the fellowship of the lord off the rings is formed. Caradhras style snow storm, caused by a dark wizard. Cartman makes fun of Harry Potter. Butters follows the fellowship. "They are coming." Jimmy sends the rest of the fellowship ahead. "Go!" "You shall not pass." 6th graders can't stand water. The fellowship fractures, some cross a river, some go along it. Butters shows the way to the video store. Butters refuses to let the Tape be returned at the last moment and wrestles it away from Kyle, then he and the tape are both thrown into the the drop box. "The tape is returned to which it came, its power over you will fade as well." When the tape is returned the 6th grader army is made impotent. Just before disastor, the parents drive up and rescue the boys. How many of those references did you get?

Interesting debate. I think we all know who won! Mwahahahaha! SP is hilarious! Cursing is funny, what's with ya Demloth! You need to chill! I certainly pity you like Nazgul said, you worship LOTR. unfortunate. burrahobbit, Nazgul, you guys ROCK! shibby. Man, you hadn't even watched it and you started this thread! Yous should know a little bit about something before you totally trashed it, just like how I didn't post my opinion here until I had seen it. Orual, next time be able to back up you're statement or you'll get beaten by Nazgul and burrahobbit again! Just a little advice!

Durelin, all I did was ask if anybody had seen it and what their opinion was. I got to see the beginning, but there were young children in the room and I wasn't going to expose them to the language on South Park. I thought the beginning was amusing but it got too raunchy for me later on. I don't know if that level of rauchiness continued on thoroughout the episode. I didn't really have a "statement" to back up. Thanks for the advice, though, I always try to be able to back up my opinions before I state them.

Durelin-i don't see where NN 10 said I "worship" LOTR. I will NOT lighten up either. My beliefs do not condone such things as South Park because of its content. However, I now do agree with Burra, that it was presumptious to judge it before seeing it, though now I have a a basic outline of the episode-all the points that Burrahobbit mentioned, add many cuss words. See, it would be perfectly funny had those swear words not been there at all, just the parody. Which is why I don't see the swearing as adding to the humor at all, but simply supplanting it for certain groups that would not enjoy such.

There isn't much swearing in this episode.
