Shield Rabbits in Middle Earth?

I investigated the web page of "Encyclopedia of Arda" and that`s what I found:
Quote:
Rabbits

Species: Oryctolagus cuniculus
Other Names: Coneys

Long-eared, furry animals, also called 'coneys', that were as common in Middle-earth as they are today. A favourite dish of the Hobbits.
Funny, isnīt it? Well, anyone who can tell me about any appearance of rabbits in any of Tolkien`s books, please post, for I am confused!

Thanks

One of the chapters in The Two Towers is called 'of herbs and stewed rabbit'.

Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbits is a chapter right out of The Two Towers. I dont want to spoil much but Sam asks Gollum to go find some coneys for a stew.

i don't see why you didin't get that, it was even in the movie TTT....

i guess tolkien used lots of modern-day animals in LOTR, i mean, horses for one. there were lots of horses in the books, there was an entire loand of horsemen (rohan)

Theres mention to them in the Shire too....Bilbo or Frodo (I cant remember which, but definately a Baggins) used to throw pebbles at them with his slingshot....
