Then he must have figured out about where to bite and then he just did it. He must have known on what finger Frodo wore it on, because he probably saw it when he did it... and thus he managed by luck to retake his precious "People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do." He must have had very sharp gums and incredibly powerfuly jaws because he basically just snapped the finger off. There was no gnawing, really. If you want to know more about the finger-biting part there is a topic for that.

I think it must have been easier for old Gollum than it would have normally as Frodo was weak, starving and ill at the time. his bones were probably losing strength as the ring drew power from him, and Gollum was lucky. also I think it said in the six teeth discussion that Gollum used to sharpen his fangs on a stone. Maybe Gollum felt exactly wher the Ring was because he was so close.

Also, Gollum's senses had been sharpened by hundreds of years in complete darkness and silence, so he may have been able to hear or smell Frodo if his senses were acute enough, which they probably were after so long.

Tarlon all those quotes in your sig are my favs!!!
And in responce to the ring: Gollum leapt on Frodo and they grappled for awhile and Gollum using his hands found the ring felt it and bit ) simple as that. and ya Gollum has a few teeth ) otherwise it would be hard to eat raw fish..

Also, with all the adrenaline from the struggle, i suppose Gollum could do something that had really never been thought of before. You know when you are in a sticky situation and you do somehting amazing? Something like that. Because with six teeth, biting off someones finger is awfully hard to do!
