Sting Aragorn and Eowyn

I don't know if this topic has been discussed already, but I tried the search function and didn't find anything.

It has of course been pointed out that Aragorn and Arwen are cousins, being both descended from Earendil and Elwing. Has anyone else noticed, however, that Aragorn and Eowyn also happen to be related? Their common ancestor is Vidugavia, king of the Northmen of Rhovanion.

Thus, it seems that Aragorn had to choose between two distant cousins.

No, I hadn't noticed that before. I'll have to crack open my appendices again.
It doesn't suprise me though. Just as in history, it seems that in The Lord of the Rings, alot of affairs are kept all in the family.

Not really. There was never any suggestion of a 'choice' that Aragorn had to take, of Arwen over Eowyn. Eowyn loved Aragorn, but there was no question of him 'choosing' her. At any rate, he was already betrothed to Arwen long before.

Actually, though, I don't think they were related. Unless you are sure, of course. King Vidugavia's daughter, marrying Valacar of Gondor, was involved in the bloodline of the South-Kingdom; however Aragorn is wholly of the Northern line. There was no Northman blood in the ancestry of Aragorn to my knowledge.

Do you mean Southern blood in the Northern (Aragorns) line, Gwaihir? Correct me if I'm wrong. But I'm sure there was and it was on this Aragorn based his claim. just before the fall of the Northern kingdom they called on Gondor to help. And Northern King at the time married the Southern Kings' sister or daughter.

That's really cool! I knew the Rohan royalty were related to the Gondor Royalty but I never made the connection with Aragorn.

If Aragon and Eowyn were indeed related, their relation would be too distant that they could hardly be called relatives At least, it's not as obvious as Aragorn's blood relation to Arwen where there was direct descendance.

By the way...

I believe Aragorn never really conveyed any affection or axcessive attention toward Eowyn. It was as if his love was fixed solely on Arwen and he didn't have to "choose" - there wasn't any love triangle (according to the books, at least; it was probably just included in the movie for effect or something... this topic is about "books", right?).

It seems that a lot of people are related. I found this link between the families a while back. It's interesting to see that Aragorn is marrying back into his own family.

Ah, but you forget that Arvedui, another ancestor of Aragorn, was married to Firiel of the South Kingdom, and she was descended from Vidugavia's daughter as well.
