Hobbit-Ears
I would like to know if I'm the only one who has missed the part of LOTR where it says that Hobbits have pointed ears.
Why has Peter Jackson given them pointed ears when it doesn't say that in the books???
or have I missed something when reading the books???
Help me please

Hey!
I have found this, hopes it answers your question, this is how Tolkien himself described what a hobbit should look like.
quote
-------------------------------------------
I picture a fairly human figure, not a kind of 'fairy' rabbit as some of my British reviewers seem to fancy: fattish in the stomach, shortish in the leg. A round, jovial face; ears only slightly pointed and 'elvish'; hair short and curling (brown). The feet from the ankles down, covered with brown hairy fur."
- J.R.R. Tolkien (1938)

Yeah, I was going to say that, it was in one of his letters or something...I had been wondering the same thing for a while. What I want to know is where exactly it says that Elves have pointy ears.

First of all, welcome to the Downs, Shamran! Enjoy being dead.
I think that it is just a generally known fact that all Elves have pointy ears.

quote:
I think that it is just a generally known fact that all Elves have pointy ears.

Yeah, elves aren't elves without pointy ears, whether it's Legolas in LOTR, or Herbert the wanna-be dentist in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie.

i read about this 'elven ear' thing somewhere but according Tolkien elves have leaf-shaped ears and many leaves are pointy...and i can't imagine that Tolkien meant maple leaves or oak leaves when writing that

Maple leaves...oh that would be weird.

In the books there isn't anything about hobbits having pointed ears.

*cracks up* Elves with maple or oak leaf shaped ears! That sounds like something out of Bored of the Rings!

ok, this is somewhat of a round about way of doing it, but in the hobbit, the part about concerning hobbits it says that they have sharp eyes and ears. now by sharp they mean good hearing and good eye sight. Now the elves have good hearing as well, and as pointed out above elves have leaf shaped, basiclly making them pointy, and if they both have good hearing I see no way for the shape of their ears to be much different. No that I have ran circles around this topic I will shut up before someone yells at me
