The main difference I can see between Gene Roddenberry's world and Tolkien's world is the existance of God. In Tolkien's world, stepping outside of Eru's place for someone is evil. Trying to control what one was not intended to control is evil. The GR world is humanistic and has a different definition of why things are right and wrong.
