Guide to creating an alternate BD account.
Ever wanted to open a new account tailored to your Barrow Downs persona? Well, look no further than this handy guide, which will help you discover the stereotype in you!
* Okay, you're all wondering what this is (and some of you are wondering whether or not you should close it and flog me). It's a quiz inspired by comments and concerns raised in Manardariel's Quiz Thread. This one uses "stilted stereotypes" as burrahobbit put it. No actual BD member names are used. (Well, except for burra. ) Enjoy. (There are four results.)

my result is the same
You are a classy, well-respected member of the Downs whose intelligence, humor, and good nature, and love for Tolkien are known by all. You might even be a moderator! I love you, wo/man. So, I recommend you choose from the following account names: Gandalfesque, Elf Friend, TooGoodforWords, The Spirit of Tolkiendom, etc. You would, of course, never use these accounts because youre too modest, but it's nice to known, isn't it?

I like this one a lot better. It's got a lot of room to improve, though. PM me if you are interested in help overhauling it.

Gosh, I too recieved the same result as Beren and Alkanoonion. Even though they are much more esteemed members of the forum than myself (If only my knowledge of the books was greater )
Very interesting little quiz. I liked it a lot Thanks Diamond!

Guess what? I got the same result. Two possibilities: We all have taken the same answers, OR the result's the same for everyone. But the quiz is nice, though I would change some things.

The answer's not the same for everyone. I got the same response as the rest of you the first time, but out of curiosity I answered as the anti-me and got a picture of a troll.
That message starts with 'You are one of those annoying fan boy/girl/things that give the mods headaches' and ends with 'Good luck. You'll need it, punk' Nice work, Diamond. I think you've raised the tone for Downs-related self-test quizzes. [ August 22, 2003: Message edited by: The Squatter of Amon Rûdh ]

Yes, funnily enough I got the "well-respected member of the Downs" one too. I suspect it's because the answers that lead to this one are those which most "normal" Downers would give (and even if not, they represent the qualities that we all think we like to have ). Perhaps burra was thinking along these lines when he suggested that it needed further work.
I tried the same as Squatter and came up with the Troll and also a Newbie-hating Books purist. Couldn't discover the fourth type, though. Well done, Diamond. Excellent Quiz (and I like the descriptions of the types - where did pitsar as a name for a troller come from, I wonder? ). Seems to me to be a much better idea than having actual members as the answers (which risks causing offence - either to those used or to those not used). Can anyone come up with any more Downs stereotypes, I wonder ...

Great quiz Diamond I love it! I keep doing it over and over again answering honestly and yet I get this every time:

I got the "classy downer" too...but upon taking the test again and picking all different answers, I got what I think is the only result not mentioned as of yet:
You are a member of the old guard, or would have been if you'd found the site sooner. You long for the days when the Downs was solely devoted to deep discussions of Tolkiens literature, and frankly you find all these Newbies rather annoying. Though this very well may be perfectly justifiable, you may come across as an old grouch, so I'm going to recommend that you choose from the following account names: Oscar the Grouch, PJHater, NewbieSlayer, FearMe or Breath of Death. Use this account to burn those Newbies alive without tarnishing the more moderate persona you may be hiding behind right now... -Aylwen

I'm a high-brow Tolkien purist with little patience for the foibles of fanboy/girl/things. Recommended account names: Philosopher's Gallstone, Lord/Lady of Prolixity, HoMEy or JRR's Ghost. Use this account for your most verbose and scholarly posts, so that all shall know what is in store for them before they embark on the perilous quest to find the finish.

I got the same result -- and also uncovered a flaw in the quiz: you have to check at least one of the burrahobbit boxes.

I expected most would get the 'classy' one, for the reasons Saucepan put forth. That's why I made it so complimentary. That seems to be the rub with stereotypes: most people don't fall under them, unless it's a really broad one (which the classy one was). The high-brow one was the second most likely to be achieved honestly, and the other two, well, I hope you could only get them by fixing your answers.
Check your PMs, burra. And I'm open to suggestions from anyone... (after all, I stole Kewld00d and Pitsar from Squatter for troller names. ) Oh, and thank you, Beren, the typos are fixed now. (It was after midnight...) [ August 22, 2003: Message edited by: Diamond18 ]

Whaddya know? I'm a classy Downer too! Now what would be fun is a 'Which BDer are you?' quiz... It'd have to be really thorough... Actually, I think I'll start making one of those.

Actually, there is a 'Which BDer Do You Most Resemble' thread not far down on the first page that has a quiz that attempts to match your personality with a prominent BDer. But then again, the more the merrier, I suppose, and things can always be improved upon. I suppose though that establishing your very own identity would be most desirable. Another classy downer here... There seem to be a lot of us. Honestly, getting that answer was kind of a relief. I dreaded any of the other results, but as has been said already, the "well-respected" one is quite complimentary. Thank you, Diamond!

How in the heck am I a tree? Do you people actually respect me? If your answer is yes, you should seriously reconsider your life. *mumbles* And I still want a personal title... Great quiz there, Diamond! |

What Burra posts have you guys been reading?
From what I've seen of him, everyone should be checking the "funny" and "smart" boxes on that question. So, Diamond, have you started work on your new and improved quiz? I'll try to think of some suggestions and send them to you.

With that sunny avatar? Come on! I have the scary and/or kill answer programmed to point to fanboy/girl/thing result.
Hm. I'd have thought you'd get Cheeky, Van. You were probably close. It's still not scientific though, just improved, so... I'm sorry, Mith, I could update it more but I think you'd still get the same result... I mean, look, you take an Uruk and a Ringwraith and make them into lovable characters. You just can't help yourself. It's sad, really.
