Finish the Song
I saw something like this for quotes but not for the songs/riddles/poems in the books so I thought I'd start one. Rules are simple. I'll give anyone who wants to play a couple lines from a song riddle or poem in one of the various books by Tolkien. Your job is to give me the next line and who said it. Whoever gets it right can do the next one. Ready? Let's play. I'll start off with an easy one:
Persuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way From: The Fellowhip of the Rings. Alright. Next line and the singer?

Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say. Sung by Frodo and Bilbo.

Very good! The first song sung in the book. And sung by Gandlaf in the movie. It is your turn, Horse-Maiden of the Shire. Let us see who can guess yours.

I hope you don't mind me interrupting here. The version of the Old Walking Song that you quoted was not sung by Frodo. He sung one very similiar with weary feet instead of eager feet.

Whoops! Silly moi. Thanks for pointing that out, Narduewen.
But still the sunken stars appear In dark and windless Mirrormere Again, from the Fellowship.

Gimli sung that to the fellowship in Moria.
There lies his crown in water deep, Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring, the trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finches sing. Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair. Sung by Sam in the Return of the King. That is one of my favourite poems. One of my favorties, too. You are of course correct. Now I'm wondering: why did I say that it was from the Two Towers? Your turn, Silmarien!

While his horses galloped up in rear,
And the cow came capering like a deer, And a dish ran up with the spoon. Frodo sings that in Bree.

Stupid me, I didn't realize I had to continue the stanza! It went like this: "And drove the ship from elven-strands/Across the streaming tide".
Continue for as long as you want: He chanted a song of wizardry, Of piercing, opening, of treachery,

Then sudden Felegunnd there swaying Sang in answer a song of staying, Resisting, battling against power, Of secrets kept, strength like atower, And trust unbroken, freedom, escape; Of changing and of shifting shape, Of snares eluded, broken traps, The prison opening, the chain that snaps. Backwards and forwards swayed their song. Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong The chanting swelled, Felagund fought, And all the magic and might he brought Of Elvenesse into his words. Softly inthe gloom they heard the birds Singing afar in Nargothrond, The sighing of the Sea beyond, Beyond the western world, on sand, On sand of pearls in Elven land. Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing In Valinor, the red blood flowing Beside the Sea, where the Noldor dlew The Foamriders, and stealing drew Their white shis with their white sails From lamplit havens. The wind wails, The wolf howls. The ravens flee. The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea. The captives sad in Angband mourn. Thunder rumbles, the fires burn- And Finrond fell before th throne. This is part of the Lay of Luthein that shows of the power of Sauron. [ September 28, 2003: Message edited by: Narduewen ]
