Get ready to submit your entries in the
Barrow-Downs Middle-Earth Haiku Contest!

Two people* will win a copy of
The Hobbit - An illustrated edition of the fantasy classic.

* best haiku and funniest haiku.

WHEN CAN I ENTER?
The Barrow-Downs Middle-Earth Haiku
Contest will run from now until Thursday, 26 July.
Winners will be announced Monday, 30 July.

WHO CAN ENTER?
Anyone except the judges may submit up to three (3) haikus in each of the two categories (Best and Funniest).

HOW DO I ENTER?
E-mail your haikus (no more than 3 serious and 3 funny) to haikus@barrowdowns.com. Along with your haiku(s), include your name so we know who the author is! We also need a good return e-mail address to contact you if you win.

WHO ARE THE JUDGES?
Winning haikus will be chosen by a panel of five judges:
The Barrow-Wight, Gilthalion, Underhill, Sharkû and Mithadan. These judges may not submit entries.

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?
The writer of Best Middle-Earth Haiku and the writer of the Funniest Middle-Earth Haiku will each win a copy of The Hobbit - An illustrated edition of the fantasy classic.

ARE THERE OTHER PRIZES?
No. But we will list our favorite runner-ups.

IS THIS GOING TO COST ME ANYTHING?
No. Just the time to write and submit no more than six Middle-Earth Haikus (three in each category). If you win, we'll even pay the postage.

WHATS A HAIKU?
Haiku is a small poetry with oriental metric that is very popular mainly in Japan. Haiku's usually have three lines with a total of 17 syllables distributed in a 5-7-5 pattern: 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. A haiku should register or indicate a moment, sensation, impression or drama of a specific fact of nature. It's almost like a photo of some specific moment of nature.

WHATS A MIDDLE-EARTH HAIKU?
Using the 5-7-5, three line pattern, write a haiku about anything in Middle-Earth. For the sake of this contest, there are two kinds of haikus - serious and funny. We will choose our favorite serious haiku as the Best Middle-Earth Haiku. We will choose our favorite humorous haiku as the Funniest Middle-Earth Haiku.

Example #1
Bilbo's smoke rings blown,
Windborne circles o'er The Hill
Wither then who knows?

Example #2
Precious, oh! Precious!
Gnash wicked masssster with teeth.
We has only six.
