Aragorn wasn't just any man.
By some genetic chance, the blood of Numenor ran almost pure in his veins. The Numenorians of the Second Age would be at the height of their powers at eighty, not stooped with age. When they came to Middle Earth, the Istari adopted the physical form of Men. They would have been tall, but not exceptionally so. It wasn't their aim to stand out and be dominant. They did not arrive as young men and they slowly aged. Gandalf is described as being stooped. Not all Elves were exceptionally tall. In the Slimarillion, the descendants of Finwe, High King of the Noldor, are said to be very tall, especially Fingolfin. This implies that other elves were not very tall. There's no reason to believe that Aragorn was not the tallest of the Fellowship. |
