I know there's a couple exact quotes that would give a better explanation, but I don't have my book now.

To sum it up to the best of my memory, Faramir didn't have as much pride as Denethor and Boromir. For instance, Denethor didn't want to be replaced by the true king, where as Faramir welcomed him back. Also, Denethor saw Gandalf as an accomplice to Aragorn in the "plot" to supplant him, so he didn't like Gandalf much, but Faramir liked Gandalf and talked with him, so that's another point.

But don't forget that deep down, Denethor did love his son, it's just that politics got in the way (and Sauron's evil influence).

I always saw it as a connection to Gandalf. denethor thought that gandalf had taken his son, and so refuses to love a "wizards pupil". However, no man can truly hate their son/daughtor.

Not sure if this is right (again, I haven't read the books for almost a year) but I believe that Denethor tried to burn Faramir because he didn't want him living with the "shame" that Gondor had become. Or something like that. Maybe it's just my own wishing of it.
