Tolkien Magazine
Hi!
If there was an official mag for lotr, what would you want in it? Would you want it to be more about books, or films? Would you want it to be intellectual Tolkien, or stuff like personality tests and star interviews? Would you like to know about other fans? If you have friends who are only very little interested in lotr (I'm assuming people who have gone to the trouble of joining here are actual fans) ask them what would make them go for a mag? I'd be really grateful if you could help, it's for a friend's coursework. Thank you

I wish there was such a thing...well at least i think its not existant. I would love a team of Tolkien scholars to work on a magazine about Tolkien's Middle earth. I prefer it to be educational information about his books rather than a movie magazine.

I really doubt whether there is one released now. Your best bet is the internet, there are plenty of articles and forums.

An already existing "collectible" magazine is being made in the UK, with disfigured figurines of people from the films. There is a discussion about it here. Enjoy!
I dont think there should be a Tolkien magazine, because it is more fun to discuss him and his works in a forum where everyone can contribute, as opposed to reading someone's views. It would be good to read about meetings etc., but that is a lot more efficient online.

And the last thing we need is Tolkien scholars going on about how they are always write, and know everything, as some do.

I agree with Inderjit, i don't think we should have a mag as such because all those Tolkien freaks would get all high and mighty on us. But if there was one, it should definetly be about the books rather than the films because the films pale incomparison basically!

Couldn't agree with you more. The books rule.

If the mag was about LOTR, ME or Tolkien, I would be there.

I don't think I made myself clear enough. What I'm asking is what you would like to see in a made-up mag, not whether or not one exists. You see, my friend is designing one for her media studies coursework, and I thought i would ask you what you'd like to see in it if one existed.
I don't mean a battle magazine, I mean a fan magazine, for example- simple elvish phrases top ten lines (film/book) 'star' interviews fan interviews etc. what do you think, and do you have any more suggestions?

Yeah, there is already a lot magazines about the movies out but not many about the books.
(Hey, maybe the people at the Barrow Downs should come out with a magazine, I know it would be hard but it would be a cool idea)If we were able to do that you could have articles about "how has the works of Tolkien affected your life?", articles by Tolkien experts, Tolkien gatherings around the world, fanart, fiction inspired by Tolkien, opinion articles. I would so read a magazine that had all of that in it.

If I had your friend's assignment, I would pretend my magazine was the newest issue of an already established one that came out quarterly. The name is his/her problem! There are so many forums with cool names, just borrow one! I would make it the spring 03 issue. There would be one article about upcoming RoTK (movie) rumours and such, a one page recap of any awards TTT (movie) has been up for.
A "Letters to Olorin" (or some other knowledgable type) would be good up at the front. Then a beautiful "Springtime in Lothlorien" spread, with various artist renderings of Lothlorien and a lot of info (book, book, book!) Maybe "Gamgee Gardens" with a bit about shire gardening. Then pick something from the Silmarillion and highlight it, maybe a small info type bit about lifespans of the inhabitants in middle earth. An ad section at the back, with all sorts of "created" products, a trivia page? ...this would be such a fun thing. I wish I was in school, instead of doing laundry and worrying about everyhting! Other Hands is a now out of print zine but you can find some of the old issues on this site:
http://www.otherhands.com/ Other Minds is a new LOTR Gaming zine http://www.othermindsmagazine.com/ Basically the name comes from a Tolkien quote about his Mythology, where other people would have to build on the foundation he made.

Everyone might like to know there are Tolkien magazines!
There is the Tolkien Society's Amon Hen, which is fab becuase it's just like an old-skool fanzine! Members of the TS send in letters and drawings and a bit of fan-fic or poetry. There are reviews and member profiles and so on. There is also Mallorn, the Tolkien Society's annual journal which has a more academic bent but is still a little eccentric. And has a new editor so I'm wondering how it will turn out when they get around to publishing it again (wasn't one last year). Then there is the annual Tolkien Studies which is often interesting, and often ruddy pretentious too, being a high level academic journal. It's also expensive, about £35 a copy! Whereas TS membership is about £20, including your mags.
