Tolkien Trivia match 1

Well, finally we have our first trivia match here on the Downs, and the teams are:

Team 1:
Legate + Finduilas + Gwathagor + Rune
and
Team 2:
Gil + Lommy + Mac + Folwren

Rules:
I shall PM each of you the question at the same time, also I shall post it here in the thread.
From the time the PM was sent you have 48 hours to find an answer together with your teammates, and if possible also support it with a quote. It is not important when the answer is sent.

Each round a team may receive:
  • 0 points for a wrong answer,
  • 1 point for a correct answer, but no quote,
  • 2 points for a correct answer and a correct quote.
Neither your answer nor your quote may be changed once you have decided upon one, so please make sure you all agree before.
However, should a team give an answer that is not the one I had in mind, but still answers my question, it will receive the points.

The answers are to be PMed to me with or without a supporting quote.

Each round I shall update the scores and post the answers that have been given, then send the new question.

This first trivia match shall have 5 rounds. If at the end of these rounds the teams have the same ammount of points, we shall have some sudden death rounds, where the first team that gets more points then the other wins.

Any problems, dissatisfactions, questions, other information are to be posted in this thread.

Ok, I have just sent the first question to everyone.
I hope all received the PMs.

Just for safety, I am posting here as well:

The bones of the answer are tough. What is the answer?

Good luck!

Thumbs up

Both teams have answered correctly to the first question. Indeed the answer that I was looking for was the country around Helm's Deep, mainly the White Mountains. But as both teams have answered and provided a quote as well:

Macalaure:
The answer is:

The country of Rohan, more specifically that around Helm's Deep.

And the corresponding quote:

Quote:
Gimli stood leaning against the breastwork upon the wall. Legolas sat above on the parapet, fingering his bow, and peering out into the gloom.
'This is more to my liking,' said the dwarf, stamping on the stones. 'Ever my heart rises as we draw near the mountains. There is good rock here. This country has tough bones. I felt them in my feet as we came up from the dike. Give me a year and a hundred of my kin and I would make this a place that armies would break upon like water.'
~Lord of the Rings, Helm's Deep
AND

Legate:

The country around Helm's Deep.
(arguable what exactly is meant by it) Supported by the quote:

Quote:

As I said, it's arguable what exactly the Dwarf means (whether it's Rohan or - my personal opinion - the White Mountains, or just the spot around Helm's Deep), but that's the work for an exegete and for interpretation, and that belongs to the Books or somewhere else; but for our purposes, I think, the answer itself is enough.

Both teams have at this time 2 points. Congratulations.

However as at this point it is 3:20 in Germany and I just came back from a party (yes, I made it back safely) I shall post the new question tomorrow around noon.

Well, back online and here comes the second question:

Who was surprised at the questions raised by another's taunting?

Well, hope that will change soon.
Though I think Folwren is as far as I know a she.

Finduilas is a guest of Tom Bombadil.
Folwren is a she, and we were gone all day, but she should get back on soon.

Alright...Now it's Lommy's turn for a full inbox. I just wanted to tell her that I am going to bed now and won't be up again until after the 48 hours is up, so I will not be sending in our answer... you see, it hasn't been decided on yet. So! Lommy - if you get this before time is up and you are the only one left to do so - send in the answer!

Tolkien

Well, the correct answer was given by...Team 2 only and it was indeed Bilbo.

The quote provided is indeed the one I was seeking, meaning this:
"I don't know if it has occurred to you that, even if you could steal the gold bit by bit - a matter of a hundred years or so - you could not get it very far? not much use on the mountain-side? Not much use in the forest? Bless me! Had you never thought of the catch? A fourteenth share, I supposed, or something like it, those were the terms, eh? But what about delivery? What about cartage? What about armed guards and tolls?" And Smaug laughed aloud. He had a wicked and wily heart, and he knew his guesses were not far out, though he suspected that the Lake-men were at the back of the plans, and that most of the plunder was meant to stop there in the town by the shore that in his young days had been called Esgaroth.

Well done Team 2. Team 1, I am sorry but I can not accept Gandalf as an answer as he being surprised by the taunting is not clearly mentioned and I do not think he fits as an answer.

So the score is 4-2 and we still have 3 questions to go. So here's the 3rd one:
Of what do the oldest of songs sing?

PS:
Finduilas you must empty your inbox.

"No! NO!"

*The sound of banging of a head against a computer*

Just so that you understand, THIS answer was among my favourite until I discarded it - from now - TWO DAYS AND THREE HOURS ago! Now I wonder, why did I? Why? I just cannot understand it, retrospectively.

Quote:
[...] But there is the part where Smaug speaks about tolls and problems when taking the treasure back, which could be considered as both the questions and taunting, and Bilbo is surely surprised by it, but the question is if we could interpretate the riddle like that.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

Sorry, but I just consider myself unbelievably stupid now

"Relax. You're not in trouble yet."

Really, Legate, you don't have to hurt yourself over it. I just happened to stumble on it in some of the last minutes, so we were lucky and you were not. Okay...so you were unlucky...

Better luck next time.

Again both teams have answered correctly, and provided the corresponding answer from the Silmarillion speaking of shadows and the legendary creatures encountered by the Elves at Cuivienen.

So the score is 4-6 at the moment in favour of Team 2.

Ok, so here is the fourth one:

Whose irritation could be discerned in naught but a facial feature?

From now on I've decided not to send any PMs any longer, since I guess it is enough if you log in you still would see that new stuff has been posted here.
