Customs
I know there is another thread on foods but i was wondering about customs (any at all, elves, hobbits doesn't matter)! I known somewhere in the book there is mention of facing west before eating (where does that come from) but is there anything else?

This custom - facing west before eating belongs to the people of Gondor... It's written about this when Frodo and Sam meet Faramir and they talk about their customs before eating... Other customs I don't know either.

The facing West before eating custom comes, I think, from the fact the Gondorians were descendants of Numenoeans. It doesn't actually say it, but I think that's what it is. Hobbits also wash before breakfast, that is mentioned in the same part of Two Towers.

The rest of that section in the Two Towers also mentions a few other customs:
1) Faramir's men would wash their hands before eating 2) Hobbits wash their heads before breakfast 3) 'Before they ate, Faramir and his men turned and faced west for a moment of silence... "So we always do," he said, as they sat down: "we look towards Numenor tat was, and beyond to Elvenhome that is, and to that which is beyond Elvenhome and will ever be." 4) Both the hobbits and men of Gondor bow to their hosts and after they have eaten, rise and thank him. |
