A Sad Deathday
Though we Downers often joke about being dead, in real life death is a sad event. Tolkien readers worldwide are mourning the death of Priscilla Tolkien, who sailed into the West on February 28, 2022. She was JRRT's youngest child, only daughter, and last of his children to survive. Many members of the Tolkien Society met her personally at Oxonmoot and other events in past days. I saw her once in a large auditorium at the 2005 conference in Birmingham, an event I will not forget.
We offer our condolences to the Tolkien family and are thankful for the part they have had in all of our lives. May Priscilla be reunited with those members of her family who have gone before her - and perhaps, in the future, with us as well.
