Lamedon Square Market Discussion Thread
LAMEDON SQUARE MARKET FACTS:
It is the 4th Age, year 21. By the Shire Calendar it is year 1443 S.R. (Shire Reckoning). King Elessar is on the throne of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor. Mirkwood has been reclaimed by the Elves and is now called Eryn Lasgalen. Peregrin Took, Pippin, is Thain of the Shire, (Thain is an honorary title for the military leader of the Shire. The title has been held in the Took Family since the position was first established in 3rd Age 1979 with Bucca of the Marish as First Thain), Meriadoc Brandybuck is Master of Buckland, and Samwise Gamgee is Mayor of the Shire, having succeeded Will Whitfoot in 1427 S.R. Éomer son of Éomund is King of the Mark (Rohan in the language of Gondor). Bard II and Thorin III Stonehelm rule in Dale and Erebor respectively. The Lamedon Square Market RPG is an open “inn”-type RPG under the supervision of the Assistant-Moderators, Formendacil and Feanor of the Peredhil : __________________________________ OPENING BLURB FROM THE MODERATION TEAM The Barrow-Downs previous incarnation of the roleplaying fora had a long history of providing a casual, friendly environment for first-time roleplayers to get their feet wet and for returning and veteran roleplayers to relax with a plot-bunny of a character. The Green Dragon Inn ran for over 100 pages in 11 threads, and was succeeded by the Golden Perch Inn, which continues today as our flagship Inn. In revising the fora, however, the new Assistant Mods, Feanor of the Peredhil and Formendacil were asked if they wanted to spearhead the formation of a new Inn-type establishment which would reflect the discussions that led to the revised RPG community. Rather than replacing the Golden Perch, which continues to go strong, the Lamedon Square Market seeks to compliment preexisting Inns by serving a different purpose. With this in mind, the two Assistant Mods elected to place their “inn” in Gondor, but with a new twist. Rather than create another Inn to compete with the Golden Perch and memories of past successes, such as the Seventh Star, Green Dragon, and White Horse Inns, the Assistant Mods looked for a new place where diverse people could meet together and rub shoulders randomly in public. The perfect place for such interaction was a market: where permanent vendors and travelling peddlers vie with each other for customers both local and foreign, and where you never know who you might bump into. Because a market does not have a keeper, the roles assumed by the Assistant Mods, while indicative of the moderatorly role they may play, are not those of formal leadership. No one in the market has to interact with anyone else--but anyone could run into anyone else just as well. This is the stated intention of the Assistant Mods: to create an environment where any RPer can get the hang of characterisation. (Note: Fea is professionally trained for characterisation and took the Assistant Modship so that she could make this skill available more readily--you should consider Lamedon Square Market your chance to book a session at Mistress Fea’s School of Roleplaying). If you think of the Inns as a chance to practice interacting with other roleplayers, consider the Market a chance to practice creating those characters--though, of course, interaction is quite possible and indeed encouraged. Above all, the Market is about having fun in a broadly Middle-earthen spirit. We hope that many Downers will join us, and do just that. Formendacil Feanor of the Peredhil __________________________________ Description of Lamedon Square Market: "He came at last by arched streets and many fair alleys and pavements to the lowest and widest circle, and there he was directed to the Lampwrights' Street, a broad way running towards the Great Gate." - RotK Lamedon Square is a fictional location within the city of Gondor, situated where Blacksmiths' Road meets Lampwrights' Street. It is the first large cross way one discovers upon entering the city, and is therefore the location of the largest of the morning markets. As one can tell by the street names, this part of the city is dedicated to artisans, to craftsmen. The market itself consists of tables and carts, shouting merchants, and anything one might expect to see in a large city full of people that wish to exchange goods. The structures of the salespeople are impermanent, however the market is open every day, regardless of weather. __________________________________ Character Description Form for the Market Each player in the Lamedon Square Market is requested to submit a very brief Character Description form to the Discussion Thread. It can be submitted at the same time as you make your first post to the Market Thread, so that other players know the basics of the character they are interacting with. Please use the following form and remember this rule of thumb: the only thing we need to know about your character is what we would be able to tell about him or her in real life if we saw him or her walk into a room. Details are developed through writing. The purpose of a character description form is to give other players a small amount of information so that they are able to interact with your character in a meaningful way. ~*~ NAME: AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: APPEARANCE (very brief physical description/or as detailed as the player wishes to be): BITS OF CHARACTER/HISTORY YOU FEEL MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING THE CHARACTER (again, as brief or detailed as you wish): Characters: Characters allowed may include anyone who might travel to Minas Anor, including but not necessarily limited to: - Hobbits - Men (including Easterlings, Southrons, and other men from the former dominions of Sauron) - Elves - Dwarves - Animals (but they must be played as animals, not as talking animals ala Narnia) Characters in the Lamedon Square Market should therefore not include: - Orcs - Any other creature or persons not liable to be found in Middle-earth. - Half-Elven characters, or mixed-species characters of any sort. - Super-heroes, assassins, any one all powerful, martial arts proficient, or having any magical traits. - Canonical characters appearing in the books. The purpose of this RPG is to roleplay original, ordinary characters--just regular people with normal abilities for their races only. Ongoing staff characters/players for the Market: * Baker (Asst. Mod) – Mistress Fea – Feanor of the Peredhil * Captain of the Guard - Formendur “Capt. Formy” – Formendacil About Elves in Barrow-downs RPG's: Please use this description from Tolkien when crafting an Elf for use in the Marketplace: Return of the King – Appendix F: Tolkien’s description for the Quendi (The Speakers) – the name given to the Elves by themselves after they first awoke in Middle-earth. “They were a race high and beautiful, the older Children of the world, and among them the Eldar were as Kings, who now are gone: the People of the Great Journey, the People of the Stars. They were tall, fair of skin and grey-eyed, though their locks were dark, save in the golden house of Finrod; and their voices had more melodies than any mortal voice that is now heard . . .” Please use this as a guideline for describing your Elven character’s appearance. _____________________________________________ Please Note: No 'SAVES' are allowed in the Marketplace. With the exception of the Moderators, no OOC (Out Of Character) comments are allowed in the Market. Only the Moderators move the timeline for the Market forward from one day to another. Visitors to the Market will likely need to read the posts that come before theirs to get an idea of what time it is in the Market Square, what the weather is like, and what is happening. Please be familiar with the rules described in the Barrow-Downs RPG Guidelines, found in the Roleplaying Rules and Resources section of the Roleplaying forum. __________________________________ Time and Space with Regards to the Market In general, all RPGing should take place in the context of Lamedon Square Market: either in the Square itself, amidst the vendors of the market, or in the nearby environs (perhaps at a tavern or inn). If a character who is going to be fairly consistent in the Market or will be returning now and again is somewhere else for a short time, it is possible to write Away posts. If you have to write an Away post please put at the top of your post in Bold: Away - your character’s name - where he or she is. For instance: Away - Captain Formendur - Osgiliath garrison Preferably, do all your writing at the Market. Away posts should only be used when necessary and not over done. How time movement and the weather will be handled in the Marketplace: The Time at the Market will be directed as the Moderators sees fit. Time will not be moved forward abruptly by the Moderators without being mentioned (and, if necessary, discussed) on the Discussion Thread. Depending on what is happening in the Market, some days will be played out in full, others may start in the morning but end up skipping to the evening if nothing is happening, since it doesn't cut out any important part of the story line. There will also be times when the time will be moved forward several days. If a player has a character who will only realistically be in the Market for a day or two (a passing traveler for instance), we are willing to try to direct time so that this player gets his or her chance to play out their visit as thoroughly as possible. This being the case, if you want to join in with a character who will soon be passing on, it may be a good idea to ask on the Discussion Thread how long this particular day is going to be played out, in case time is about to be moved ahead. Weather will for the most part be directed by Fea and Formy, and can be discussed, too, by the players on the Discussion Thread. __________________________________ IT IS NOW VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING, IN LATE SPRING, WHEN THE FIRST FRUITS COME RIPE. THE WEATHER IS PLEASANT. Ahaha so from now on I'll test play all my tabletop RPG characters here. Seriously though, looks like a lot of fun.

You know, this is also kind of the ideal opportunity to get to write for your favourite minor characters in your RPGs and stories... Okay, we'll see, I think I'll have a character or two here at some point but we'll see what I come up with. I'm also tempted to bring back my first ever RPG character from the Green Dragon Inn, poor one has been neglected for a long time...

a joke/placeholder; don't know when this character will see action
NAME: Angelimar (often, to his faint annoyance, shortened) of Edhellond. Occasionally introduces self as Knight of Edhellond, or Lord, or Count, that sort of thing.
AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: twenties, male, Man, Edhellond (apparently) APPEARANCE (very brief physical description/or as detailed as the player wishes to be): not that tall or strong but good looking enough, grey-eyed with long black hair, pallid, fast on his feet. Dressed in fine clothes, favours blue and grey colours. Looks a bit like what he claims to be, one of the faintly Elvish men from Dol Amroth way...if he didn't also seem so untrustworthy. Just can't hold your gaze. But smiling and pleasant and talkative and jolly. BITS OF CHARACTER/HISTORY YOU FEEL MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING THE CHARACTER: not often seen in the square, though a welcome visitor to some; when he passes by it's usually evening but far from night. Likes to drop hints he spends most of his time on the upper circles, or a country estate somewhere by (where else) Edhellond, or Dol Amroth, or some more or less improbable mixture. Spends a lot of money, often on drinks for other people, but doesn't appear to be possessed of (or capable of) gainful employment

I suppose I ought to properly "register" the aforementioned Captain Formy, what setting a good example as a mod-type and all.
NAME: Formendur son of Belecthor, known almost universally as "Captain Formy," or just "Formy." AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: 53/Male/Southern Dúnedain/originally from Anórien, but resident in Minas Anor for more than three decades. APPEARANCE: Captain Formy is a mountain of a man. He combines the height of his mostly Númenorean lineage with the girth of a soldier who's spent most of his career under the pax Elessar. 6'2" and weighing over 300 lbs., he's a dangerous man to cross, and could probably crush most miscreants without help from the detachment of Guard he commands in the vicinity of the Great Gate. Nonetheless, while Captain Formy may be a bear of a man, it's mostly as a teddybear. He makes regular patrols of Lamedon Square in person, so as to keep a watchful eye on "his" people, and also to make regular visits to his favourite vendors, having something of a sweet-tooth, and being what the 7th Age would call "a gourmand." One of his favourites in the market is Mistress Fea, whom he considers the first-among-equals of the vendors, by reason of having been there longer than most. (Okay, it's a lot of description... but "I" am a public figure, after all! )

Fictional Fea
NAME: Feane Cooper (known as Fea)
AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: 32/Female/Human. From the lowest circle of Minas Anor, born and raised. APPEARANCE: Fea has always been of the thought that a chef that doesn't test their own wares to make sure they're perfect doesn't deserve a single customer. As such, her wares are always perfect, but also have gone from her ovens straight to her hips, but she doesn't at all mind. She dresses in highly practical dresses and aprons that will survive the trials of kitchens. She is an average type of 'pretty' with a welcoming face and a not-much-nonsense attitude that is apparent from her hair, which is always pulled back in a chignon that starts out the day severe, but works its way loose as the afternoon wears on, leaving strands of nearly-black hair on the verge of escape.

Name: Bertufin (Old Berty)
Age/Gender/Race/Where from: 52/Male/Men/Ringlo Vale originally; now Minas Anor Appearance: Tall, mildly stooped posture, gaunt, small potbelly from too much drink and too little food; a number of teeth missing; pale scar from left temple to chin; eyes brown - patch over left eye. Grey, stringy hair shoulder length with some dark strands still visible; right leg amputated at knee – uses a wooden T-crutch padded with old rags; ring finger, little finger missing from left hand. Generally disheveled and dirty looking. Raggedy, patchwork of clothes and footwear. Has a moth-eaten greatcoat with numerous pockets and a small old leather bag he slings over his shoulders. Bits of Character/History You Feel Might Be Helpful in Defining the Character: An old soldier who has not fared so well since the Battle of the Pelennor. He received his wounds there, and when he was well enough to travel home to Ringlo Vale, he found his family murdered and farm destroyed when Orcs rampaged through the vale while the men were off soldiering. He’s never been quite “right” since then – a bit twitchy, nervous, given to fancying there are ‘things’ out to get him. And sometimes the horrors of the battle rise up again in his mind and he becomes completely cut off from present reality. All this is not helped by the fact that he drinks as often and as much as he can to keep those horrors at bay.

Laconic Loreman
|
NAME: Lendir (Lenny)
AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: 11/Male/Men/Minas Anor APPEARANCE: A little on the short and tiny side for a boy his age. His tiny ears stuck out but his short, dark-brown hair, was starting to grow over, halfway hiding them. BITS OF CHARACTER/HISTORY YOU FEEL MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING THE CHARACTER: Lendir was a frequent visitor to the Lamedon market, usually to pick up the list of food his mom (Ellen) would give him for the day. Food he could not wait to bring back home, where he would help his mom in the making of a delicious meal. He was an only child, but there was another coming, and he could not understand what kid would not want a younger sibling. If helping his mom cook was Lenny's favorite thing to do, going to the market was his second favorite. And his favorite place was Mistress Fea's The Risen Loaf. He liked hanging out with Erchan. Even if Mistress Fea acted like she only tolerated allowing Lenny to stay in her store for hours, as she was not a babysitter, he was convinced she liked having him in the store more than she let on. Because, he knew full well when Mistress Fea was seriously angry and when he needed to stop hooliganising around with Erchan. And if he was good enough, when all of his shopping at the market was done, he would return to the bakery and hope Mistress Fea would ask if he'd like to help her with the pies or other goodies.

Brilliant idea!
Here are my characters. They're kind of experimental. I'm afraid that they will only reach Minas Anor at mid-morning, though. And I'll also name the character after myself... NAME: Ghalakrěd (often called Rhűnwen by Gondorians) AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: 43/female/Men/Rhűn APPEARANCE: Shorter than an average Gondorian woman, only about 5.5’ tall. Very thin, but not slender. All features are pointed and sharp. Her swarthy skin is darker than a Gondorian would have, but much lighter than a Haradrim’s; it is more of a hue of a deep tan. Her elbow-length dark brown hair is pulled into a crude bun. Her dark eyes are slightly slanted. Wears a long-sleeve loose-hanging dress, the colour of which is somewhere between brown and grey. Her voice is severe and slightly hoarse. All in all, she would not be classified as pretty. BITS OF CHARACTER/HISTORY YOU FEEL MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING THE CHARACTER: Always finds something wrong with things, people, and anything else. Easily becomes offended; resents others, and bears a grudge for long time. It is very hard to please her. Usually bottles up her anger. At times could be proud to the point of stubbornness. Ghalakrěd had a very harsh life, which lead her to her present situation. She was brought up to hate the West, a feeling which hardened when her father was taken as a soldier and killed in the War. Her mother died soon afterwards. She has two younger brothers, but she hasn’t seen them, or even heard news of them, ever since she left her home to trade whatever goods she could in other lands, over twenty years ago. She hardly remembers them at all. Her only clear memory of her family is her mother bidding her goodnight, calling her Ghallë. However, in Gondor her name became Rhűnwen, Easterling-woman. No one knew her, but everyone called her by that name. Ghalakrěd noticed that even though Gondorians were too polite to openly show their distaste towards her, she could see it hidden in their “innocent” questions about her home and in their carefully chosen words. As Ghalakrěd learned to live with the conquerors, she learned not to respond to these questions, partially because she lost whatever home she had during the War. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ NAME: Horse (or Mule, when Ghalakrěd is irritated) AGE/GENDER/RACE/WHERE FROM: not too old to work/male/donkey/somewhere in the path of Ghalakrěd’s travels APPEARANCE: A small grey donkey. As thin as his mistress. He pulls a small plain wooden cart with Ghalakrěd’s humble supply of wares. BITS OF CHARACTER/HISTORY YOU FEEL MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN DEFINING THE CHARACTER: At times could be cute and adorable. Cheerful by nature, though a lot of times he is downcast because of his mistress’ mood. Quite clever. *Does not speak; only thinks, feels, and pulls the cart.* Loves being called “Horse”, hates being called “Mule”, but always thinks of himself as a donkey. The donkey does not have any special abilities; he's just a regular donkey. I just think that it would be interesting to look at things from his point of view.

Name: Posy (or Zimzi – rarely called Zimziran, her given name)
Age/gender/race/where from: 14, she reckons/female/Men/the docks and harbor area of Anor as far as she can remember. Appearance: Looks childlike, younger than her years. Lithe, wiry. Long, bright golden hair; fair skin; light grey eyes like the sea under a noon sun. Barefoot mostly, save for the colder months when she wears old clogs stuffed with hay for warmth. Wears a faded plum colored dress most days. Tries to be as clean and well-groomed as she can manage. Bits of character/history: Orphan since about the age of four. Knows little of her past save her given name and the vague memory of some kind woman’s face bent over hers. Lives with a motley collection of other cast-off young ones (eleven of them at the moment). Hidden away from the eyes of the city proper, they shift for themselves as best they can. ~*~ Ancillary characters: Derry - 16/male/short brown hair and brown eyes. Juggler extraordinaire and and quite adept at running games of chance. Garan and Goran – 7 y/o/male twins/yellow hair and bright blue eyes. Excellent little pick-pockets. and a small host of 7 more as they come into play: 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) 5.) 6.) 7.)

Hey...I've only just peeked in here today for the first time. I'm considering joining, but I am looking for excitement, which means I'll need to create an exciting character. It crossed my mind that a market place may be an ideal place to creat a thief character. I've never played a thief character...I've never written with a thief character, actually. I mean, sure, I've had my mischevious fellows steal once in a blue moon, but that doesn't really make them thieves, now does it?
I glanced through the existing characters and there don't seem to be any thieves yet created. So I have two questions: Are my observations correct and are there indeed really now thieves? And, May I create one, or is that too contraversial for this game thread's intention? -- Folwren P.S. I can promise some action if you say yes.

It's been a while... I thought I'd finally let my character in...
Though I reread the game thread, I might have forgotten some details , so if my post contradicts anything, please tell me and I will edit.

It looks absolutely wonderful, G55. The writing is clear and strong, and the character is already likable and memorable. Both, actually! Welcome!

I replied to your character. I think I'm putting too much of that "you're the enemy and a stranger here" philosophy into it, if it took me that long to say two or three sentences in answer. Gotta hold back a bit...
