What background-events should be in the "Hobbit-movie?"
I'm sure most of you will agree that a movie of The Hobbit,if it will be made should have some background footage like Lord of the Rings had with the War of the Last Alliance and Isildur and the like.
I think it should have Smaug attacking Erebor and driving out the Dwarves,Gandalf discovering Thrain in Dol Guldur.........possibly even a little attention to the assault on that stronghold of Sauron by the White Council!Coming to think of it,Thranduil being attacked by Sauron in the past could be interesting as well.Anyone else have ideas?

I don't know if it should or not. I mean, in LOTR there was much background that had to be told for you to understand the story. In the Hobbit, pretty much Tolkien introduces the world of Middle Earth to the readers. Usually The Hobbit is the first ME book people read. You don't really need any background info other than how Smaug got there, and they could do a whole "Frodo and Gandalf in Bag-End" type thing...only with Bilbo and Gandalf...and maybe a few Dwarves for that.
I just don't see a need for a whole Prologue at the beginning like in LOTR. But it might just be me.
[ July 08, 2003: Message edited by: Eruwen ]

Well I'd say the attack of the White Council might be included because it shows what Gandalf actually does after he leaves Bilbo and the Dwarves. Also,Gandalf might have a flashback of finding Thrain in Dol Guldur when asked by Thorin how he got the map and the keys of Erebor. It would definately be interesting.I can allready imagine Gandalf sneaking through the poorly illuminated hallways of Dol Guldur to end up in the dungeons where he finds Thrain.

i agree, Eruwen.
those who have read about the history of M-E would maybe seek for deeper information but i don't see any harm if the movie hadn't prologue.
i can imagine that the prologue would look amazing (big, evil Smaug attacking the dwarves and plenty of visual effects...)but it would be very gloomy.i love the feeling of the Hobbit-book, it's so cheery and after all - it is a hobbits tale, why shouldn't it be.
information that is needed can be told without prologue.

I agree with the cheerful aspect. The Hobbit was rather jolly, and it would spoil it to make it too gloomy with destruction, war, whatever...

When Bilbo asks Thorin about why they are going to Erebor, they should do a scene like when Elrond was telling Gandalf abot how Isildur didn't destroy the ring. (Thorin starts to explain, then it cuts to a series of shots of Erebor being attacked by Smaug with Thorin narrating)
PS I wonder who should play Thorin?

In my opinion The Hobbit would be very easy to make into a fantastic live-action movie. One of the most interesting background pieces of information that no one has mentioned is how the swords Orcrist, Glamdring, and Bilbo's Sting ended up in the Trollshaws. The movie could also show what life was like mining coal in Ered Luin. These would just be interesting pieces of information that Tolkien fans would enjoy seeing in a movie based on The Hobbit.
