Shield Places, beautiful and ugly

There many places discribed in the book Lord of the Rings. Some are beautiful like Rivendell and, some are ugly like Mordor. But What is the most beautiful place and the most ugly place? And what is the most hardest place to picture in your mind? I know I had a hard time trying to figure out how Treebeard's place looked!

I think Imladris was the most beautiful place in all of Middle-earth. That sense of perpetual autumn captured me from the beginning. Of course, the fact that the majority of the Noldor in Middle-earth still dwelt there probably also helps, since the Noldor are my favorite race of Elves.
As for the ugliest place, I would have to say Mordor (surprise, surprise!). It isn't just because there aren't any green, growing things. It's something about Sauron's spirit still lingering there that makes me hate it completely.

I thought the Dead Marshes were quite pretty, in a brooding, mysterious sort of way. Also, Fangorn is rather mysterious and eerie.
Isengard before Saruman's mass tree executions is beautiful, but I would say it was the ugliest place after it was demolished and turned into a mass of fiery pits. His floral print furniture makeover didn't do much for the place either
I think the most beautiful place of them all is Minas Tirith. I think the way it is built is fantastic.

Aw, you're just saying that because Denethor lives there.
I think Fangorn is absolutely gorgeous. The trees, the shrubbery (I really like that word! Don't ask why), everything about it is really pretty.
The ugliest place? I would have to agree with Meela and say Isengard after all the wanton burning and cutting down of trees was over. Grr.

I have to agree with Meela on the dark and dreary atmospheres, but I would add Mirkwood to my list. It has a delightful sound to it.
The ugliest place? Isengard ties w/ Mordor for worst place to live. Poor trees

I think Rivendell was the most beautiful. (Though Lothlorien was nice too).
As for ugly, I'd agree with both Meela and Horse Maiden, Isengard was even too ugly for Trading Spaces! (You think one of the designers, let alone the carpenters would go for it?)

Yes, Mirkwood is a splendid place to live.
And for once I'm not actually including Denethor I fell in love with Minas Tirith purely for the wedding cake architecture. If you have read Bored of the Rings, you should remember the Italian wedding cake reference Of course, Denethor is one heck of a bonus...

Ugliest place: Isengard narrowly beats Mordor. I think it's because Isengard used to be green, but then Saruman went and mucked it up.
Prettiest place: For me, the Shire. Or Lothlorien. In the movie I think they made it look dark and sort of threatening, but I pictured it being all gold and light. So they're both great places, can't pick one!

The Shire is too green and happy. How can one live in a place that happy?

I think the most beautiful place was Mirkwood by far. Everything about the woods and peace in it was beautiful.
The ugliest place was Isengard after Sarumon cut down all the trees.
The hardest place to imagine was Edoras. I thought it was much different than the movies image.
Burzdol
