Perhaps the first born was known as 'Durin' to the outside world, but that was not his name.
I'm afraid that we don't know much about the Dwarves.

We know the names of the seven houses but not, I think, of the Fathers.

Great sites Lalaith! Very informative.
However, as for the topic, I don't think Tolkien ever intended to state the names of the Dwarves ever in any real detail unless he absolutely needed to. The dwarves were always set up to be "the dark peoples" of Arda, you know. With so much information on the other peoples of Middle Earth i think that it was necessary for Tolkien to give us a group of people to have to guess about. scott I would doubt you would be ignorant on the subject. The Dwarves are just peoples that we don't know much about. I have to agree with the statement that they were the "dark people", additionally they always liked to keep to themselves down in the mines and dark places.

Only Durin was ever mentioned.'Of Dwarves and Men'(HoME 12) mentions that 'Durin' was a mannish name for 'king' since Dwarves never revealed their Khuzdul names.
