Who is your favorite "bad"" guy in ME

Well the question is before you but I think it needs some explanation, first it means which bad guy is your favorite? And second whom do you most dislike most in master Tolkien's works? You know who do you love to hate bad guy or not.
Edited by: as eowyn at: 11/21/00 5:25:56 pm |

I just love the fact that he is the result of something that has been to the worst extreme possible in life and nothing shocks him and nothing can deter him from his last remaining mission. He has been driven beyond his wits completely by the ring and is absolutely prepared to kill to be near it. I wish he had done more disgusting things though like been sick a few times or started eating himself or something. He died a bit suddenly.
|

I have a personal grudge against the fellow and he is evil. Very Very Very evil. Smart, complex, treacherous, Machiavellian in fact. Also the most "modern" character in the book -- in "The Scouring of the Shire" he was ready to turn the Shire into Airstrip One! (Wonder if JRRT had read "1984" or knew George Orwell? They were political opposites but both appreciated the old, unspoiled English countryside.) Reading about Saruman's persuasive voice, I always think he must have sounded like Ronald Reagan.
|

I really really hate Sauron and Melkor, but I pity them too I mean they were great once, but all that power went to their heads and turned them evil, and they could never be good again, but I really really pity Gollum,on the same basis as Sauron and Melkor.I mean sure he had his own fate and I seriously believe that he never was good,-like Sauron and Melkor they were chosen for it and they would never put themselves under Eruhir's rule-but Gandalf said that he still had a corner of his mind to himself but what use was that? None at all.He was fully in the Rings power and nothing could've saved him,so I really dislike and Pity Gollum(GF you have a strange point of veiw all of the wonderful story would've been ruined if Gollum had eaten himself, besides I think that after the Ring had been thrown in he would've been a bit more like himself or dead cause he was like older than five hundred so he would've crumbled to dust).Glaurung was a pure evil spitefull spirit in a Dragon's skin,I mean he did'nt seem like a true dragon to me seriously He was disguised as a dragon,a perfect hatebly Bad Guy. I dislike Lotho SB,he's an idiot and he unknowingly brought his death upon himself, poor pathetic pimple Sam Ps.Bill Ferney was bad too,he made fun of the Hobbits and Strider and earned that apple on the nose Humph,
|

What about Melkor ? He created the evil in the first place, sort of
And the thing about Shelob, that she had no reason to be evil is´n´t true. She wanted food and she wasn´t evil you know. She ate what she got she didn´t kill just for fun...

My favorite bad guy is definately Gollum. I pity him and I think he's cute... in an evil sort of way lol. I also think the dwarf Mim was a bad traitorous evil backstabbing... I didn't like him too much, if he wasn't so evil maybe Beleg wouldn't have died!

My favourite is Smeagol/Gollum! And I don't love to hate him, because I just can't put myself to hate him! He's not hateable, even though he does all those things. You can probably tell I'm a Smeagol fan (Piture, Signature ) The other bad guys I wasn't fond of. Wormtounge reminds me of someone who I don't like in real life, so naturally I hate him I haven't really read any of the other books (I'm working on the Silmarillion right now, and the Unifinished Tales are coming next) other than LotR trilogy and the Hobbit. So I'm just going to stick to that.

I'd have to say that my favorite bad guy is Morgoth because of his epic role in the history of Arda. He is present from its creation to its destruction, and has such an interesting personality.

For pure, unadulterated malice, it has to be Glaurung. He is given a mission to ruin the lives of Hurin's family. And not only does he do it in the most evil and spiteful way, but he seems to delight in doing so.
Yep, he's the baddest of the bad for me.

That's an interesting idea. He is more arrogant than anyone else.
Although if arrogance is the deciding factor, I'd have to go with Ar-Pharazon. Dooming his whole continent so he could get eternal life is just a really rotten thing to do, although Sauron had a hand in that. I hope he's happy. |

I am at a disadvantage, I suppose, having only read the main canon of The Hobbit and LOTR (and a few Letters and about half the Silmarillion about 13 years ago...gone from memory now!). But speaking just from the books I have read, I'd say that what interests me is the method and manner of the Fall of the 'bad guys' such as Saruman. Also Denethor, even though he is not a 'bad' guy. What do they have in common? Well, they're naughty boys who use the Palantir too much! I think the idea of a machine so ancient and so advanced that it provides such an avenue to corruption to even the strongest minds of Middle-Earth--that is an interesting concept. I like to think of the Palantir concept as evil reflected. The 'only what you take with you' concept that also applies in the Realm of the Lady of the Wood. I suppose the concept of the fall interests me more than the actual fallen. The mechanisms of Saruman's and Denethor's falls (although Denethor's 'fall' is into despair, rather than malice and evil deeds) are the most interesting aspects of 'bad guy' concepts to me! Also the efforts of the fallen to rise above their fallen state: i.e. Gollum. My interest is drawn by the struggle, rather than the innate 'badness' of the individual, I suppose. Perhaps I can call it the procession from the fatal flaw, or something equally absurd!
don't mind me! It's too late for me to think straight and another station has taken over my airwaves! Cheers, Lyta

I really don't think that there are any "bad guys" I hate or even dislike. Scratch that, Fëanor and Mim, but they aren't big bads. I'm partial to Glaurung. He's soo cool . I love Narn I Hîn Húrin, they should make it into a movie.
Back to subject, I always thought that Melkor wanting to be an individual was cool and righteous. It's wrong that he was classified as evil. What did Tolkien have against individualism (if that's the word)?

Denethor, if he is a 'bad guy', is my favourite.
Is Grima Wormtongue counted as a bad guy? He's another of my favourites. So is Morgoth.

Saruman is my favourite. He becomes evil and thinks of himself as a smart evil dude. But, so sad, too bad he is not smart enough. lol

Hmm...It's a tie between Smeagol and Wormtongue. Even though they're bad, they're just so pitiful you can't help but love them.

My favourite bad guy, the one I love to hate would be Denethor. I don't like hating a really repulsive bad guy, because there's no joy. Denethor is a really cool character and his madness only adds to it. Go the bad guys!!!!
