Ring Smeagol and Deagol

I'm not sure if this should be a question for the books, or if it is silly and easy enough for here at Novices, but I will ask it here..

What kind of creatures were Smeagol and Deagol? I have read that part several times, but I must keep missing the part where it explains what they were! Can someone clear this up for me? Thanks!!!

Sméagol and Déagol are hobbits of the Stoor strain. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that the Stoors are more heavily-built and robust than the other two hobbit types (Fallohides and Harfoots) and like to swim. In Sméagol's time they dwelt along the river.

Yeh. That sounds right. I know for certain they were Hobbits. But the different types confuse me....they're all shorter than me, that's how I know they're Hobbitsessessess.....

I was wondering, does anyone know what happened to the hobbits who had been living in the villages near the Gladden Fields? Were they killed or chased away by Orcs, or did they simply follow their distant cousins into Eriador?

actually, I believe that things happened exactly the opposite of what you described. When there was war in Eriador, some of the refugee hobbits of the stoor fled to the east of the misty mountains and settled at the banks of the Gladden.
