Afer the War of Wrath that ended the First Age of the Sun, the survivors of those races of Mankind that had helped the Elves of Beleriand were offered a new, safe home on an island near to Aman, the home of the Valar (Gods). There they founded the Nation of Numenor, under the Kingship of Elros, Elrond's twin brother.
After a very long time, people from Numenor began to visit Middle Earth again, where they were called Dunedain, which means Men of the West, because Numenor is in the ocean to the west of Middle Earth. Numenor was destroyed close to the end of the Second Age when its people were corrupted by Sauron. Elendil and his sons were among the survivors of that Atlantis-type event. It's all in the Silmarillion and the Appendices to The Lord of The Rings. Last edited by Selmo; 08-20-2004 at 08:52 AM. |

Well put...
I think most has been covered, to make a few points here. The dunedain are the descendants of Numenor, and as said were called "Dunedain" in Middle-earth. Also, as said Elendil was from that line, and was of course the first king of Gondor, when the line of "kings" was broken, and was ruled by Stewards. The Dunedain were from the "line of kings" and could reclaim the throne, as Aragorn did. First you have to prove your "lineage," not any random person can claim he is from Elendil's line and take the throne.
For a short explanation on Elros, first king of Numenor. Yes, he was Elrond's brother, half-elven like his brother, he decided to become mortal and then became the first king of Numenor. So yes, that means Aragorn and Arwen are RELATED!!! Lol, but more like cousins 1,000 times removed lol. |

Boromir-- Heh heh, it's always a kick to tell my non-LotR-savvy friends that they're related, and then watch them go "Ewwwwww...." I usually then clear it up for them. Usually.
