Who is the best character in the movies?
My favorite character is probably Smeagol/Gollum, because he has such emotion behind him, and the way he is fighting with himself is heartbreaking, yet understandable.

I also have to say that Ian McKellan does a butt-kickin' job of playing Gandalf. He really brings the character to life.

I can't wait until December 17..."The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is gonna be an awesome movie, and i can't wait to see Sean Astin's character "Samwise Gamgee" make one of the hardest decisions his world has to offer.

I also have to say that Orlando Bloom is awesome as Legolas. Oh, and I can't forget Elijah Wood, who makes Frodo all the more realistic.

John Noble as Denethor: he's excellent!! And very scary... I hide behind a chair whenever I watch the previews.

This discussion is for all the movies, so it doesn't matter, in case you were wondering. I remember reading an article on Smeagol saying that they likened his image to that of an 800 year-old heriod addict. let that be a lesson to us all, lol.

I think everyone did a great job acting. I didn't like some of the character changes PJ made, but the actors and actresses did a fine job doing what they were asked to do. After the first two movies, I think I've been impressed the most by Sean Bean as Boromir.

As far as which actor looks the most like his character, I would have to say Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn. He IS Aragorn!
The dude who plays Elrond (can't remember what his name is right now) is awesome too. They're all awesome!

Frodo is my personal favorite in the film just because I feel so sorry for the poor guy. The way that Elijah acts out the charater is different from what I though of the charater during the first time I read the books, but I still like it.
And Gandalf is my favorite because in regards to the books, his charater was right on. So in my opinion the two best charaters in the movies are Gandalf and Frodo, but I like all the others just as much too.
P.S. Elladan and Elrohir, the actor that played Elrond so well is Hugo Weaving

Owh, I feel so stupid! How could I forget!
Miranda Otto plays Eowyn very good, to. Eowyn was always my favourite in the books, and she is just great in the movies. I like her expanded role as well.
Namarie!
Aethelwine.

Boromir is my favorite book and movie character. Sean Bean was amazing and really made me look twice at book-Boromir. I realised he was much deeper and more complex than some people made out. At first he can come across as evil and like he's up to no good. He was played wonderfully and I have a soft spot for anyone with flaws in their character (like Boromir). I think it makes them more interesting. *Gibbers on with random praise for some time*
I just think Boromir's great. Jump on the bandwagon!

I think Sean Astin's portrayal of Sam was the best performance, with Sean Bean as Boromir a close second and Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn third.
I also must disagree with a few of you and say that I thought Elijah Wood's performance as Frodo was quite good, but nowhere near the best.

Yay!! i'm happy my discussion has piqued the interest of so many people. Gosh, I think the guy who played Eomer (Karl something...forgot...) was right-on, if you understand me.

Karl Urban. Yeh, he was super! He had a great ferocity about him. Very warrior-like.

I though Eomer was really well done. All my friend (not a man of many words) would say was, "That guys cool." I would've loved to see him in action at Helm's Deep (more than a few seconds), but oh well (that's a rather small change really if we're looking at TTT).

Are we talking characters or actors?
They once asked many of the cast members about their favorite character, or which movie was their favorite. One of them (Sean Astin?) responded and said "That's like asking which CHILD do you like better?" I can't answer which character.
If we're talking which ACTOR, though, I'd have to say Sean Astin. He seems to be the most genuine of the group. The rest have been in many unpleasant movies, and Elijah Wood swears like crazy.

Ian Mckellan did such a wonderful job as Gandalf in both movies. He really deserved the Oscar for his FOTR performance especially. I thought he pegged the difference between Gandalf the Gray (very wise and a little grumpy) and Gandalf the White (very wise and beyond grumpiness) to a "T".

quote:

this is for both the actors and the characters. if you feel like commenting on the actors, by all means, go right ahead. if the characters are what strikes your fancy, then have a ball and talk about them... whatever one feels like (as long as it pertains to Tolkien in some way, of course)

In order:
1. Galadriel. Cate does such a wonderful job... a truly regal look with beauty, sadness and power-induced respect.
2. Gandalf. Ian again... hes wonderful... Second only to Galadriel cause I love how Galadriel looks!
3. Samwise... such a faithful companion... such a great friend... but sometimes he acts like he was more than just a friend...
4. Gollum... tragedy embodied... Poor guy...
5. Arwen... beautiful...
5. Aragorn... hes just HOT!

The question wasn't which actor you like best, rather which performance you thought was best (or which written characterization, I suppose, though performance usually affects us more). Discussions about the personal lives and habits of actors is discouraged on the Downs.
I was most impressed by Sam/Sean Astin, Boromir/Sean Bean, and Sméagol/Andy Serkis.
[ September 19, 2003: Message edited by: Diamond18 ]
