How many times have you read LOTR?

I just want to know how many times people have read The Lord of the Rings and if they are going to read it again!

I have read it twice and I am going to start it again on Christmas Vacation!

The Perky Ent 12-07-2003 02:37 PM

I myself have read it four times. Actually, I've read the Return of the King five times because the movies coming!!!

Imladris 12-07-2003 02:40 PM

The Hobbit: probably about five times?
Lord of the Rings: more times than I can count.

Catherine 12-07-2003 02:57 PM

Wow thats so great! I also read the Hobbit 2 times. I started reading LOTR when I was 13 and now i am 15 and I am going to read it every year on christmas vaca. cuz thats when I read it for the first and second time.

Finwe 12-07-2003 03:04 PM

I've read both books innumerable times. It's really crazy. I've been reading them ever since I was 6 or 7, and I read them twice a month, so you can do the calculations. That's about 216 to 240 times!

the hobbit many times

LOTR properly 3 but various books or parts of them or volumes innumerable times.#

The Sil- more, especially the parts that involve Fingolfin.

Meela 12-07-2003 03:45 PM

The Hobbit~ twice

Lotr~ Not quite once, but I have read Rotk several times on its own.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 12-07-2003 04:17 PM

The Hobbit- six or seven times, maybe? I'm finishing it up again.

LOTR- I read it once a year, so four times, and then I'll read it for the fifth time once I finish The Hobbit again.

the Silm- twice, although referred to often for various research

The Elusive Spirit 12-07-2003 04:53 PM

I read the Hobbit 1, The Lord of the Rings and the Silm. 2 times. I'm reading LOTR to my brother now, We'er at the beginning of TTT.

Nimrothiel 12-07-2003 05:19 PM

Oh geez, I can't remember how many times I've read the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Hobbit." I can tell you it's a fairly large number.

Theoric Windcaller 12-07-2003 11:00 PM

... yeah... I've read the hobbit and trilogy once throughout the entirety of my life... yeah.

How sad.

Theoric Windcaller 12-08-2003 11:49 AM

Its kind of hard when your 13 taking Sohphomore classes. When the teachers asks you to do a book report with a book of HER choosing, I do it. But when I finish, she loads us with another. I don't find true peace until the summer or holidays.

Failivrin 12-08-2003 04:14 PM

yeah, it is hard to read when you have been given an assigned book, but i read Tolkien upstairs, mostly in bed and EVERYTHING else, no matter what it is downstairs. therefore i read Tolkien everyday before i go to sleep.

Theron Bugtussle 12-08-2003 05:35 PM

Whoa, Finwe! Some kind of speed-reader? Or do you not find other books interesting?

And Meela, you have a site with all things LotR, yet have not read the whole book? There must be a story there.

I have read LotR approximately 8-9 times, and The Hobbit approx. 5-6. In about 30 years.

Hobbit: 35-40 times

LotR: 9 times, plus one for RotK by itself, to prepare for the movie.

Silm: 1 and 1/2

UT: 1

Finwe 12-08-2003 08:27 PM

Theron, I'm a chronic insomniac, and have been since the age of 9. I regularly stay up until the wee hours reading books. And yes, I'm a speed-reader. I can go through FotR in about two days, if I'm up to my regular speed.

I have an addition to make:

The Silmarillion -- About 280 times (since I'm obsessed with Elves, especially with the House of Finwë, can you tell?)

The Elusive Spirit 12-08-2003 08:56 PM

Wow Finwe! Thats crazy. Well, it's not so crazy. It took me a year to read the Silm the first time.

Theoric Windcaller, I know what you mean. It's hard to read school books and other
books at the same time. (Not that I don't!) Remember, you have Christmas break to read
all you want!

Alatáriël Lossëhelin 12-08-2003 10:17 PM

I first read the Hobbit & LotR in 1966. I couldn't tell you how many times I've read/reread it since then. The Silm I've struggled more with. I attempted it 2-3 times in the 70's when it was first published, but in the past couple of years I've managed to actually finish it 3-4 times. It really helped when I bought the Middle-Earth Atlas. I've also owned the audio cd's of Silm, Hobbit & LotR for almost a year, and they've been playing non-stop in my truck ever since. I have about an hour commute to & from work each day, and I spend it with Tolkien.

Enorëiel 12-10-2003 10:08 PM

The Hobbit - 2

Lord of the Rings - 1 and 3/4 (I'm on the last hundred pages of ROTK)

The Silm - Own it but haven't gotten a chance to read it

Gashberz 12-11-2003 12:59 AM

WOW i really havent thought of that. Gee i have been reading them since middle school, and now im in 11th grade. I have read the hobbit 28 times. And I have read the lotr trilogy about 15 times. I am currently reading it again. I love these books so much. I never get tired of reading them. God Bless you J.R.R. Tolkien

Not really I tried, and I have read a lot of it, perhaps even all of it, just in small parts. On this site I was criticised and put down for not reading it all, so I tried to re-read it. Unfortunately, pushing me towards the books makes me resent them, so I have not looked at the books for some time. I will also never read the Silmarillion for the same reasons.

Apart from that, I generally prefer the background information to the story itself. I have read the Appendices many times, so I'm not entirely without knowledge.
Besides not reading the books, I am a big fan of Lotr, which is why I have my own site. Just because I haven't read every line it doesn't mean I don't like discussing it.

lord_of_rohan2003 12-11-2003 08:02 AM

I've read LOTR just about 2 times,im on book 6 of ROTK,and i've read the Hobbit about 2 times as well. And then after Christmas im finnaly going to tackle the Sil.

Tuor Turambar,Cursed by the Valar 12-11-2003 08:09 AM

Hobbit- at least 5 times
LotR- 3 complete, each book separately 1 (without rereading the whole thing)
Silm- 2, also for reference

I guess I should read it more

Shy Hobbit 12-21-2003 09:22 PM

I've only read The Hobbit once, would be much more if I owned it.

I've read the trilogy 4 times on my own, and just recently finished up reading it to my nephew. (We finished before the movie!) And I'm currently starting on it again, am in The Two Towers. So yeah, going on 6 times

Did the Sil once, will probably do it again sometime, but LotR will always be my favorite.

Rasputin 12-21-2003 09:31 PM

just once....i would read it a few more times, but the books where stolen (along with everything i owned) a while ago

and i havent read the hobbit.....but its on my xmas list this year!!

Samwise 12-21-2003 11:29 PM

Well, I first read LOTR when I was twelve. The ending broke my heart, and I couldn't bring myself to read it again until a bit after FOTR the movie came out. I am about a quarter of the way into ROTK now, but again, am having trouble making myself read it 'cause--well, 'cause of the end!

Am only partway through the illustrated version of the Hobbit.
This has been a super busy year.

Um... Well... I've read it once a month since well, for two years now. So that's 24 times. And no, I don't know it off by heart yet. I also watch the films once a week, and listen to the audio books as much as possible. Yes, I'm a little obbsessed

Nimrothiel 12-23-2003 09:34 AM

Really purplefluffychainsaw? I couldn't tell . I've only read the Silm twice, and I think I've read the Hobbit 50 times, and the trilogy 35 times.
I've watched FotR 4 times, TTT 3 times (soon to be four)-which is actually kind of sad as I own both movies -and I've seen RotK twice.

Um, I first read Tolkien when I was 11 (I'm 16 now)... I only read the Hobbit once, since I didn't really care for it, but I read LotR a year later, and loved it to bits. I read it eight times in that first year alone, until my 17-year-old copy fell apart and it had to be discarded at a gas station in Poland...

After seeing RotK the other night, I've resolved to read it again, for the twelfth time.

I've read the Silmarillion 4 times, Unfinished Tales twice, I'm skimming bits of The History of Middle-Earth series here and there, and I've read Tales from the Perilous Realm a few times too.

kittiegirl 12-23-2003 06:22 PM

About 31 times since I was 11, and it's been a few years since then.

stickifinger 12-31-2003 10:27 AM

About once a year since I was in high school, so over 30 times. I'm reading it again now and Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli just helped Theoden kick Wormtongue out of town.

Faenaduial 12-31-2003 03:35 PM

I first read LotR 31 years ago. I try to re-read it at least once a year (the first few years I read it several times) and I actually just finished reading it again a few days ago. Although I haven't kept exact count I would say:

LotR - approx. 35 times
Hobbit - approx. 10 times

I finally found a copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight this week. (I had been looking for it for years). Can't wait to read it!

Meela, don't listen to the criticism about not reading all of the books. Not everyone enjoys Tolkien's writing style. I know some people who couldn't get through the first book and gave up only to pick it up years later and fall in love with it.

Don't let the criticism stop you from picking up the books in the future. You may find that at another time they may give you great enjoyment.

I have always enjoyed reading your posts. Don't let a few complainers spoil your fun and enjoyment of the site.

Samwise 12-31-2003 08:57 PM

Sigh. Read LOTR the first time when I was twelve, and I tried to read it again. I did not pick it up again for 20 years because the first time the ending broke my heart. I saw the movie just the other day...and now I know, as I came out of the movie sobbing hysterically, I can't ever read to the end of the Return of the King. Sigh. Sorry, I'm a big sap, but I just can't do it.

Meela, don't feel bad. They are wonderful, enjoyable books with a GREAT story. Don't worry about what anyone else says. Like I just said, I can't bring myself to ever pick up (at least, the Return of the King), again, but that's just 'cause, like I said, I'm a big emotional sap. Read them and ENJOY them.

There was another topic like this already a couple years ago:
How many times have you read LotR?. It is closed now so that we may continue the discussion here, but be sure to look for older topics before opening redudant ones. Thanks!

I'm working on my first read now... On about page 150...

Arathiriel 01-01-2004 12:08 PM

I have read LOTR twice and I am working on a 3rd read - and allow me to say welcome to my friend Aragorns Twisted Angel!

Aragorns Twisted Angel 01-01-2004 12:10 PM

Hey there mellon-nin! Yeah, it's taken me quite a while to finally read them (I've been on page 1 for over a year and haven't been able to get past it till seeing ROTK)
